Explore Santa Barbara's Taco Trail: Navigate the Way to Flavorful Tacos and Zesty Margaritas

Beautiful girl eating a taco
Santa Barbara offers yummy tacos

Santa Barbara County is a foodie’s haven, and there is no shortage of diverse cuisines to taste and devour. One of the most prominent cultural cuisines is without a doubt—Mexican food—a Southern California staple. With Mexican restaurants all over Santa Barbara and surrounding areas, it is almost impossible not to stumble into one from time to time. Santa Barbara is unique in that the authentic, small, and fresh Mexican restaurants outnumber the chains and tourist traps that can flood bigger California cities. Not sure which taco joint to start at? Keep reading.

There are the more well-known spots in Santa Barbara that consistently draw crowds and have great food, but locals know not to ignore the numerous small, hole-in-the-wall places that offer the chance to skip the line and explore something different. Take a stroll down Milpas, away from the hustle and bustle of downtown, and try to fight the urge to enter one of the many humble façades coaxing passer-byers with the aroma of freshly-baked tortillas. If time and transportation are an object, step into one of the hidden gems off State Street for a quick and satisfying hunger fix. If a post-meal margarita is in the cards, stay tuned for Santa Barbara’s top margaritas makers.

THE MILPAS TACO TREK

A quintessential Milpas joint is Taqueria El Bajio. A family-run business offering traditional homemade Mexican dishes, it’s impossible to go wrong ordering from the extensive menu. Some favorites are the carnitas tacos and the tamales, especially the sweet corn and pork renditions. A short block away is La Colmena, another quaint taqueria with a quality selection of meats. Locals love the rajas tacos (peppers and gooey cheese slathered over a handmade tortilla) and rave about the homemade orange-peanut-habanero salsa.

Cesar’s Place gets two thumbs up for its fresh seafood—and there is plenty of it on the menu to choose from. Order the ceviche campechana, a fresh blend of fish, shrimp, and octopus, served with a side of homemade crispy tortillas and saltine crackers. Or, go the nontraditional route with a big plate of fish and chips. Whatever menu item is ordered, guests will leave full and happy.

Pay a visit to Altamirano’s for a homey atmosphere and friendly service—look no further than the paintings on the walls of the owners cooking traditional dishes in Mexico for confirmation that this place is the real deal. Lucky diners may even spot Mama, the chef behind it all, taking a break from preparing her famous gorditas or sopes. Chile rellenos are another high demand item here.

One place on Milpas that isn’t such a secret is Los Agaves, and it’s easy to see why. A cheery interior with wood-and-tile tables greets eager customers as they line up at the front to order. The menu features several seafood and authentic Mexican dishes. Not to be missed is the self-serve salsa bar, arguably one of the best in town due to the variety of choices and fresh flavors.

It might not be solely Mexican food like the restaurants lining either side of it, but The Shop Café does make some mouthwatering fish tacos that are worth trying. The “Really Good Fish Tacos” (appropriately named) are homemade blue corn tortillas with grilled Santa Barbara Cod and sliced tomato salsa—refreshing and delicious. Named “The Shop” because it is located next to a tire shop, this little café’s motto is “slow food, fast.” It’s true, as most of the ingredients used seem as if they belong in a gourmet, sit-down restaurant—not a hut where customers order through the window.

La Super Rica Taqueria was a favorite of Julia Child’s. Not much more than a cement shack with a bright blue exterior, La Super Rica has attracted a ton of media attention for its celebrity clientele and terrific tacos. The widespread attention does have its downsides, like the almost-constant line wrapping around the corner from where this shanty stands. It has remained an iconic figure of Milpas taquerias throughout the years, however, so it’s safe to say people consider it worth the wait.

STATE STREET AND BEYOND

Meat lovers beware—there are abundant exotic choices in store for those willing to comply. The legendary Lilly’s Tacos downtown, and with a new second location in Goleta, serves cabeza, cachete, lengua, labio, and ojo tacos—or beef head, cheek, tongue, lip, and eye. Tamer options such as chicken and veggie are available to those who aren’t feeling as adventurous. There is nearly always a line out the door, as Lilly’s is a scrumptious option that won’t break the bank. A bit down the road from Lilly’s Santa Barbara location on Chapala Street is Romanti-Ezer, a taco stand with the motto “Weird name, delicious food.” Walk up to the inconspicuous stand to order, then head around the corner to the hidden patio in the back to feast on traditional Mexican delicacies. Bar hoppers rejoice: on weekend nights, this is one of the few late-night SB haunts, open until 3 am.

Casa Blanca Restaurant & Cantina is an upbeat State Street stop with Spanish-style architecture and décor, designed by renowned architect Jeff Shelton. A hand carved Acacia bar accompanies 120 tequila options while brightly colored tiles line the floors and walls. As for the menu, Mexican classics such as chile rellenos and fajitas are served alongside more rare options such a birria (lamb shank). The outdoor patio features people watching and a fire place—perfect for a chilly Santa Barbara evening.

No taco list would be complete without mentioning Super Cucas, the self-proclaimed first Taqueria in Santa Barbara. Winner of the Santa Barbara Independent’s “Best Burrito” contest every year since 1991, Cucas offers hearty portions made with authentic ingredients. With two locations in Santa Barbara and one in Isla Vista, diners can check out firsthand whether Super Cucas deserves this coveted title.

Another frontrunner on the scene is El Sitio, a local chain with four locations that include Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Isla Vista. Owners Jose and Sanjua Gil named El Sitio after the small Mexican town they grew up in, located in the state of Zacatecas. The first branch opened in 1990, and the restaurant maintains its popularity today serving the culinary delights of interior Mexico. Soccer games and Spanish soap operas regularly broadcasted on the flat screen TV’s contribute to a relaxed atmosphere.

The scent of pan dulce baking in the oven is enough to draw anyone into Los Tarascos in Santa Barbara or Goleta. It promises tasty Mexican sandwiches (tortas) and pastries, as well as fresh-squeezed juices. The pastry menu changes daily, offering dessert and lunch pastries hot out of the oven. From the torta selection, “La Tarasca” is a top pick—ham, egg, tomato, beans, bacon, lettuce, onions, cheese, and roast beef all on homemade Bolillo bread.

Look no further than Beach Liquor Tacos To Go in Carpinteria for an inconspicuous taco joint. Located inside a general liquor store, Tacos To Go serves some of the most popular breakfast burritos in town. Food can be taken to go (as the name suggests) or enjoyed at one of the few tables available inside. With amazing views and beaches in town, it’s highly recommended to get the food to go. Whatever decision is made, be sure to sample the salsa bar, and for those in a hurry, call ahead to have the order ready upon arrival.

Heading north to Santa Ynez? The award-winning Dos Carlitos has a lively ambience and great Mexican cuisine served in generous portions. The chicken, steak, shrimp, carnitas, and mahi-mahi tacos are hard to beat, as is the ceviche. A beautiful terrace complete with a fireplace sets a picturesque scene for a feast. Dos Carlitos has two sister restaurants: Carlitos Café & Cantina in Santa Barbara and Cava in Montecito, also local hotspots.

KILLER MARGARITAS

For those looking to quench their thirst after some savory and authentic Mexican cuisine, luckily there are several restaurants that doubly serve as a watering hole—of the libations sort, that is.

Sandbar in downtown Santa Barbara has a large menu of margs, ranging from the Watermelon Fresca, which includes fresh watermelon and Elderflower liqueur, to the “Pepino Diablo”, which features muddled cucumber and jalapeno. Sandbar also serves just about every kind of taco imaginable, perfect for pairing with a fun margarita.

The Boathouse at Hendry’s Beach offers incredible beachfront views and a mean Blood Orange Margarita (add jalapeno for an extra kick!). Its isolated location on Hendry’s Beach makes for a peaceful setting, until it strikes 5 pm on weekdays and the working crowd races in to unwind. As if that isn’t close enough to the beach, try Shoreline Café on Leadbetter Beach where customers can be seated on the actual beach for a margarita in the sand.

Located in the historic La Arcada shopping center, Cielito offers an impressive atmosphere coupled with an equally impressive margarita. The “Cielito” Margarita is their signature, with fresh lime juice, tres agaves blanco, and agave syrup. Add-ins like Grand Marnier, serrano, fruit purees, and mezcal encourage customization of the classic. Another locale with a variety of options is Blue Agave, also in downtown SB. The Guava, Prickly Pear, and Habanero Margaritas are just a few of the unique and flavorful choices to pick from.

Heading south down the 101, Cabo’s Baja Grill & Cantina in Carpinteria is the perfect place to relax and sway to live music while sipping a margarita. Here they are available by the pitcher and made from local limes and oranges. Sit outside and enjoy the sea breeze and peacefulness that is characteristic of this pleasant coastal town.

Del Mar Escapes Announce New Cabo Resort Options for January

Swim with dolphins in Cabo San Lucas at Los Cabos
Swim with dolphins at Cabo San Lucas

For a family tired of being bundled up for a cold American winter, this just may be the perfect time to head to Cabo, where the temperature will be in the 80's all January long. Del Mar Escapes has recently announced that new resort options will be available for those vacationing this winter in Cabo San Lucas.

Del Mar Escapes have long offered some of Cabo's premier services. The beaches available to vacationers are the most pristine in the region: estates open up onto the white sand and rolling waves. The amenities (private terraces, private dining areas, private pools, etc.) and services (private chef, private butler, in-room spa, effortless concierge, and more) have solidified the reputation for luxury that the resort enjoys. There's a reason that celebrities such as Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Meryl Streep have vacationed at Del Mar Escapes in recent years.

That's what makes their new resort options so exciting. Rather than staying indoors this winter like everyone else, guests can head to Cabo for the vacation of a lifetime, and experience the new options presented by Del Mar Escapes. They can enjoy a luxurious and romantic cruise around the Sea of Cortez as the sun sets on the blissful oceanic horizon.

They can snorkel, dive, or kayak by day, and eat a luscious meal prepared by their private chef, served on their fireside and seaside private terrace by night. They can spend a day golfing on the 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, or playing tennis at the world renowned Palmilla Tennis Club. Or they can stay on that perfect white sand, at Club 96, the resort's beach club, or simply in a chair, with the tide tickling their feet and a good book and fresh beverage by their side.

Winter is the perfect time for a Caribbean getaway, as vacationers can avoid the large groups of tourists that flock south over spring break and summer vacation. Rather than being one of the crowd, they can choose to be one of the few, and enjoy the privacy and luxury that Del Mar Escapes have to offer thanks to their new January resort options.

Guests are invited to flee the snow and the chill of northern climes and head south this winter. To encourage a sunny vacation, Del Mar Escapes has recently announced new Cabo San Lucas resort options for the month of January.

Fashion Illustration Creates Its Mark in Contemporary Art World

Barbara Tyler Ahlfield painting
Painting by Barbara Tyler Ahlfield

Barbara Tyler Ahlfield, a leading retail fashion illustrator, announces the completion of her latest collection, "POSE," to be exhibited at Artexpo/SOLO New York 2014. This debut represents Barbara's artistic evolution from a 30-year retail fashion legacy as a leading American retail fashion illustrator to a creator of large- scaled, fashion-themed oil paintings.

While dramatically different in medium, size, design and impact, "POSE" integrates certain key elements of fashion illustration- dramatic posing, elongated figures, "romancing" of fabric and beautiful, on-trend models- and then carries them forward in this new mode of artistic expression.

"It is important to evolve with the times and find the audience for your work. I am looking forward to showcasing my most recent fashion-inspired collection of oil paintings- entitled "POSE"- in the upcoming Artexpo in 2014,” stated Barbara Tyler Ahlfield.

Retail fashion illustration has evolved from drawings of seasonal fashions used for print advertising into a stand-alone art form in the modern art world. Over the last seventy- five years, newspapers and magazines displayed hand-drawn illustrations advertising apparel manufactured by top fashion designers as well as moderately-priced department store fashion merchandise. All department stores contained their own advertising departments with several in-house staff fashion illustrators.

Retail Fashion illustration was once a "destination occupation" which required experience, talent and skill to deliver a beautiful piece of art that could also sell merchandise. With the demise of bricks and mortar retail and the ascendance of digital art, traditional fashion art has sought new avenues of expression.

For more information on Barbara Tyler Ahlfield and her illustrations, please visit:

About Barbara Tyler Ahlfield:

Barbara started drawing at the age of two and was soon decorating her bedroom walls with crayon fashion drawings. As a child she was fascinated with the glamorous fashion she saw in the old black and white films on Television as well as the formal portraits she studied during children’s classes at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery. Following college, she united her loves of art and fashion into a career that spanned 30 years as one of the leading, award winning retail fashion illustrators in the country.

The archive of her illustrations is one of the few existing collections of American fashion illustration over the last quarter century and offers a retrospective of the American woman’s changing sense of style as well as changing illustrative styles. On any given day her full page illustrations appeared in many of the major newspapers in the country including the New York Times, Chicago Sun Times, Washington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, etc. showcasing top American fashion designers for the major US department stores such as Lord and Taylor, Nordstrom, Dillards, John Wannamaker and many more.

Sometimes a Pop Song is Also a Great Song

by Jeffrey Dale Starr

To paraphrase Morrissey in Unloveable: If I seem like a music snob/well, that's because I am.

Like a lot of music snobs, I am generally of the opinion that most popular music is junk.

But this year's hit Royals by Lorde has reminded me that every now and then a truly great pop song comes along. So I decided to compile a list of Top 40 hits that I think were just plain awesome songs, regardless of their success.

I'm leaving The Beatles off of this list because they would comprise the entire list.

Freddie Mercury of Queen
Bohemian Rhapsody
Queen
How in the world did this song ever get played on the radio? Don't know, but I'm sure glad it did. I think Queen is one of the greatest bands ever, and no doubt about it, this is their masterpiece.

Britney Spears
Toxic
Britney Spears
What can I say - I have never tired of this song. Great melody, cool spy-movie lead guitar, even (dare I say it) good lyrics. A perfect pop concoction.

Gorillaz
Feel Good Inc.
Gorillaz
I have mixed feelings about this because I'm a big fan of Damon Albarn's band Blur, and this song achieved much greater success than he ever did in his main gig. All of that aside, when this song comes on I turn it up. Every time.

Prince
When Doves Cry
Prince
I'll never forget the first time I heard this song. I was sitting poolside at a hotel and it came on the radio of a fellow sunbather. I thought it was one of the catchiest, weirdest things I had ever heard. Still a singular work of art.

Peter Bjorn and John
Young Folks
Peter Bjorn and John
Love the deadpan singing by Victoria Bergsman of The Concretes, love the whistling, love the whole thing. Just cool.

Rhinebeck Artist Thomas Cale Announces Jazz Painting Project Scheduled to Open in 2014

Dylan by Thomas Cale
Dylan by Thomas Cale

Thomas Cale, artist, of Rhinebeck, New York, has announced plans to unveil his latest project, a series of paintings dedicated to iconic figures who have brought jazz music to the masses through the years. The show is inspired by greats like Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker, among others, and even includes some of the everyday faces of non-celebrity musicians who share their love for the genre by bringing music to the streets.

Several dozen paintings that have been developed by Cale, mostly with oil and pastel mediums, are expected to be included in a show set to open in 2014 in New York. The venue and details will be announced at a later date.

“There is no doubt that the jazz movement has not only transformed the music world, but has also enhanced the work of all kinds of artists – writers, painters, sculptors, and a variety of others - who are inspired by jazz as they embark upon their work. And, of course, the influence extends so far beyond all of that; most everyone enjoys the layers of jazz as they live out their lives with the music as a backdrop in their car, home, or office,” stated Thomas Cale, artist.

Cale has long used modern color schemes and broad brush strokes to capture the energy of faces and figures. Some of his most recent shows included “Village People,” “God and War,” and “Celebrity Mugshots,” all of which showcased his unique ability to bring people to life on canvas. He also customizes guitars with images and faux finishes.

“For me personally, jazz music really fosters the creative process; I want to somehow bring it to life by giving people a visual experience to go along with the music,” said Cale.

Atlanta Artists Win Herradura Tequila Barrel Art Collection Competition

Atlanta Artists Win Herradura Tequila Barrel Art Collection Competition

After a nationwide contest to find the most artistic and inspiring barrel art creation from 80 uniquely handcrafted pieces of art, Tequila Herradura awarded a $100,000 cash prize to Micah and Whitney Stansell from Atlanta. The brand partnered with Thrillist to host the "Barrel Art Collection" competition finale, at LMNT in Miami on Wednesday, December 4. Micah and Whitney Stansell were among eight regional winners who already took home $10,000 for creating one-of-a-kind artworks using Tequila Herradura's oak barrels; these finalists included:

  • NY: Kim Holleman
  • Atlanta: Micah and Whitney Stansell
  • Austin: Raul De Lara
  • Chicago: Adam Toht
  • Santa Fe: Max Lehman
  • San Francisco: Adam Feibelman
  • Miami: Kiki Valdes
  • Los Angeles: Jocelyn Duke

The event, which was attended by artists, media and influencers, benefitted Creative Capital, a renowned arts organization, dedicated to supporting innovative and adventurous artists nationwide. The organization will receive $70,000 donation from Tequila Herradura, to support its Professional Development Program workshops.

The idea for Micah & Whitney Stansell's piece titled "Look Inside, 2013" came after they spent time with the barrel and therefore, started thinking about the barrel as a utilitarian object rather than an aesthetic object. Then they struck upon the idea to create the work on the inside of the barrel and keep the outside unchanged with a marquee sign including a simple call to action: "look inside". The art drew parallels – aesthetic and historic with the art of making tequila. Part of their work was to pay homage to early cinema with a zoetrope, and serendipitously they were able to reference Herradura elements such as the agave and the horseshoe.

"It's hard to overstate what one hundred thousand dollars means to a working artist. More than anything it carries with it a feeling of freedom; the sense that we are free to continue making art on our own terms," said Micah and Whitney Stansell. "For Herradura to stand up and say 'we think that art and artists are important and we're going to put a significant and substantial amount of money behind that belief' is incredibly encouraging and truly vital. We are humbled and honored to have been awarded this prize from among this incredibly talented group of artists."

Tequila Avion Introduces Avion Reserva 44

Avion Reserva 44 tequila

Tequila Avion is excited to announce the launch of Avion Reserva 44, an exceptional extra anejo tequila. Avion Reserva 44 is hand bottled in extremely limited batches and carefully filled into a fire-polished, luxurious crystal bottle. Only 744 cases of the unique, handcrafted extra anejo tequila will be available worldwide and the brand will unveil the first 150 select cases of Reserva 44 just in time for the holiday gift-giving season. This very special addition joins the already exceptional line of handcrafted tequila from Avion, which was voted World's Best Tasting Tequila at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Avion Reserva 44 is crafted in the highlands town of Jesus Maria, Mexico. The process to create this exceptional tequila begins with the founder's unwavering commitment to quality. Avion Agave is hand selected and estate grown at 7,000 feet above sea level. Slow roasted in brick ovens for 72 hours, the Avion Agave is carefully distilled and filtered through Avion's proprietary ultra-slow filtration method, where it is then aged for 43 months in oak barrels to create an incredibly smooth and finely balanced finish. The final step for Avion Reserva 44 is aging the liquid for an additional month in specially selected petite barrels, which are rotated daily. It is during this intensive process that Reserva 44 takes on its rich, complex character. The liquid is then hand-filled into a fire polished crystal bottle, hand numbered and individually signed by Founder, Ken Austin. Reserva 44 is then enclosed in a uniquely crafted luxury gift box and shipped in a wooden crate.

"I've waited and waited to release Avion Reserva 44. Years ago, I reserved specific batches of our tequila to be placed into the Reserva 44 barrels and have closely watched their progression," said Ken Austin, Founder and Chairman. "This release is the culmination of our bespoke tequila process. Reserva 44 is a spirit that the most demanding of tequila connoisseurs and single malt scotch drinkers will fully appreciate."

Jenna Fagnan, President of Tequila Avion, said, "Tequila Avion has become the fastest growing ultra-premium tequila on the market and it's due to Ken's unwavering dedication to always push traditional tequila rules and never settling until all previous limits have been surpassed. Avion Reserva 44 once again reminds us of why Avion was voted the world's best tasting tequila."

Avion Reserva 44 has the distinctive character of Avion Agave with hints of warm vanilla, ripe luscious fruits and a touch of spice—the hallmark of Avion fine tequila. It is 80 proof and is available in 750ml fire polished crystal bottles (SRP - $150.00). It is best enjoyed neat at room temperature or with a single cube of ice.

Viator Announces Exclusive Lord of the Rings Hobbiton Movie Tour in Time for World Premiere

Hobbit Village

As the world awaits the upcoming release of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” Viator.com, the leading resource for researching and booking tours and activities worldwide, has announced the launch of a new collection of hand-picked experiences that bring travelers straight to the heart of “Middle-earth.”

Dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien as the hometown of the characters in “The Lord of the Rings” and in the prequel trilogy “The Hobbit,” Middle-earth is depicted beautifully on screen by film-maker Peter Jackson, using the lush and stunning landscapes of New Zealand as the backdrop. Viator has added three new “Hobbiton” tours to its selection of Lord of the Rings experiences so fans of the Tolkien series can revel in behind-the-scenes access to the actual sets used in filming. In addition to walking in the footsteps of Bilbo and Gandalf, travelers will be treated to insider information provided by expert local guides.

Be the First on Set, Only with Viator

Available only through Viator.com, the Viator Exclusive: Early Access to The Lord of the Rings Hobbiton Movie Set provides the ultimate behind-the-scenes look at where ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and the 'Hobbit' trilogies were filmed. This exclusive small group tour departs Auckland at 6:30am and arrives at this popular attraction near Matamata, a small agricultural town approximately 2.5 hours' drive from Auckland, before the site opens to the general public. The expert guide brings travelers to portions of the set typically only accessed by the crew and off-limits to other tour groups. Travelers will see Bilbo Baggins’ house, Bag End, the Mill and the Party Tree among other recognizable landmarks, and enjoy a hearty breakfast at the Green Dragon Inn.

Tolkien fans have a chance to win two free tickets to the Viator Exclusive Hobbiton Movie Set tour: details on the contest, which runs until December 20, can be found on Viator’s Auckland & North Island blog.

A Private Journey to Middle-earth

For a personalized experience, the Private Tour: The Lord of the Rings Hobbiton Movie Set Tour from Auckland lets travelers select their departure time from Auckland and travel to the Hobbiton movie set on a private drive along the meandering Waikato River. On the way to Middle-earth, travelers will see where a famous battle took place in 1863 between Maori and British forces at Rangiri, have views of the sacred Taupiri Mountain and drive through the historic site of Ngaruawahia, seat of the ancient Maori king and a traditional Maori meeting place. Hear tales of the filming and visit the films’ iconic sites including the Hobbit holes cut into the ground at Bag End. Travelers enjoy lunch at the Green Dragon Inn before a relaxing return trip to Auckland.

Combine the Hobbits of Hobbiton with the Glow Worms of Waitomo

Travelers can experience two of New Zealand’s most popular attractions during the Private Tour: Waitomo Caves and The Lord of the Rings Hobbiton Movie Set Tour from Auckland. The private drive through the gently undulating farming country makes its first stop at Waitomo to join a 45-minute tour of the glow-worm caves, including a tranquil boat ride on an underground stream to ensure an up-close view of the glow worms. After lunch in Waitomo, travelers are transported to Matamata and the Shire's Rest café where the Hobbiton tour begins. The tour takes visitors on a drive through the bucolic sheep farm chosen as the Hobbiton movie set and visits its most memorable sites before returning to Auckland.

Walt Disney Animation Studios Now Showing Pixar How It's Done

Frozen by Walt Disney Animation Studios

by Jeffrey Dale Starr

Just a few years ago, Pixar was the gold standard of quality animation and Walt Disney Animation Studios was seeming like Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard: a faded star who didn't realize their time had passed.

While Pixar was making classics like Finding Nemo and Wall-E, Disney was churning out dreck like Brother Bear and Home on the Range.

Then a funny thing happened.

Disney bought Pixar. I thought this certainly sounded the final death knell for Disney animation. Surely, they wouldn't waste any more time on their second-class fare and would let Pixar take over.

But that isn't what happened. Walt Disney Animation Studios released Tangled, a truly perfect animated film. It featured great artwork, first-class songs, clever dialogue, true emotion...some of the things that Pixar was doing so well and some of the things that Disney Animation had mastered in its golden era.

Over at Pixar they were releasing Cars 2. A ho-hum sequel that would have made a fine direct-to-video release or a one-hour special on The Disney Channel. But a theatrical release? Very un-Pixar-like.

Next up, Disney released Wreck-It Ralph, a wholly original story that was Pixaresque in its tone and message.

Meanwhile, Pixar was offering up Brave: a movie that looks gorgeous but in the end has no clear vision. What starts off as a serious statement about identity and gender roles turns into a slapstick farce with a muddled plot.

And now this week Disney has released one of their greatest animated films ever - Frozen. Aside from the beautiful graphics (that's a given these days), the writing is first-rate. The voice acting is spot-on. The songs are as good as anything Broadway will churn out this year. The message and climax are truly unique...something that Pixar used to own the patent for.

To put it plainly, my two favorite animated films of all-time are Tangled and Frozen, both by what seemed to be an extinct Walt Disney Animation Studios.

And what does Pixar give us? Monsters University.

Let's hope that the boys in Emeryville feel the pressure and step up their game.

Gwyneth Paltrow Gives Her Children a Priceless Gift

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow has always valued the fact that she learned Spanish as a teenager and wants to pass that legacy on to her children.

And she's doing it the best way possible - insisting that her 9-year-old daughter Apple and 7-year-old son Moses only speak Spanish.

The benefits of teaching such young children a second language are manifold. Aside from expanding their view of the world at large and building empathy for others, learning another language helps you to understand your native tongue in a deeper way. By analyzing the workings of language itself, you start to understand the importance of etymology and grammar in your first language.

A friend of ours has actually taught his daughter 3 languages from infancy, and she has had no problem meeting the challenge. When she reaches adulthood she is going to be very grateful, like Paltrow, for the priceless gift that her parents gave her.

A valuable aid in teaching young ones a second language is Banana Cat - Learn A Language!, an app for iPhone and iPad that teaches kids 50 different words in 8 different languages. The app is like an interactive flashcard system with sound effects, vivid illustrations and audio versions of each word.

Musician Roger Clyne's Mexican Moonshine Celebrates Three New Awards

Roger Clyne

Arizona-based recording artist Roger Clyne has, for the past fifteen years, created a fan-focused community that meshes music with all forms of merriment infused with southwestern culture and mythologies. To that end, he created the award-winning Mexican Moonshine line of fine tequila, which has just released its third marque, Añejo.

The buttery Añejo boasts honey and woody notes, with hints of tobacco and vanilla. It joins Mexican Moonshine’s Silver and Reposado brands, which in 2011 earned Tequila.net’s “Best of the Best” award. Last month at the Spirits of Mexico Tequila Festival in San Diego, the Añejo and Reposado both won a Gold medal and the Silver took home a Silver.

In addition to being a tequila aficionado, Roger is eco-conscious. He developed Mexican Moonshine with Fabrica de Tequilas Finos, SA de CV, a notable boutique tequila distiller in the city of Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico. The distillery uses a clean, sustainable, and progressive process that removes impurities from the waste water. The exceptional quality of the end product is reflective of how the tequila starts.

Mexican Moonshine has its own mythic creation story. Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers have been curating and hosting a music festival, Circus Mexicus, in Rocky Point, Mexico for more than a dozen years. In 2009, the first large-scale amount of Mexican Moonshine was created to be sold and enjoyed by RCPM fans at the festival. But it almost didn’t happen, until a trusted band friend did his own little cross-Mexico moonshine run to make sure the tequila made it to the event (which it did, to great relief, and success).

Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers have released six consecutive albums that have debuted in the top 10 on Billboard's Internet Sales chart, the first independent band to ever accomplish that feat. Two of those albums, 1999's Honky Tonk Union and 2004's ¡Americano!, debuted at #1. That streak of creating timeless rock music continues with RCPM's most recent studio album, Unida Cantina. In addition to Circus Mexicus (with attendees from more than 32 states and 7 countries) and their headline shows, RCPM have opened for Dierks Bentley, John Fogerty, Willie Nelson, Barenaked Ladies, Live, Blues Traveler, Sammy Hagar and Kid Rock, among others.

Clyne enjoyed an accomplished stint with The Refreshments, a late-90s rock band whose cult-classic album Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big & Buzzy produced the hit singles Banditos and Down Together. Clyne also wrote and performed the theme song for FOX’s animated hit, “King of The Hill.”

More information about Mexican Moonshine, including U.S. retail locations and online sales can be found at MexicanMoonshine.com.

Tequila el Jimador Revamps Its Bottle

el Jimador New Bottle Design

Tequila el Jimador, the No. 1 selling 100 percent agave tequila in Mexico, significantly updated its bottle aimed at expanding the brand's footprint. Tequila el Jimador's evolution in packaging design presents a new premium look to match the quality of the product. As part of the campaign, the brand will continue to encourage consumers to live life at 100 percent, with courage, passion and pride, attributes that are found in every bottle of Tequila el Jimador.

The revamped bottle features a dynamic embossed illustration of the iconic Jimador, a figure that represents the hard work and dedication to craftsmanship displayed by the master agave harvesters. The slightly modified body of the bottle features stylized, pronounced corners at the shoulders and base, giving the body of the bottle a sleek, modern appeal. Some of the other design changes include a bigger bottle size, smaller streamlined, colored metallic label design to showcase more of the premium tequila, and uniform caps, all aimed at creating a better presence on the shelf. All bottle sizes will be evolving to the new packaging and will maintain the same price point.

To support the launch, the brand will implement a focused brand investment in OOH, digital, print and social platforms including a new intuitive, user-friendly website. Through all these elements, the brand will provide a more valuable experience to consumers.

"With more than 1300 tequila brands in the marketplace, consumers are faced with many options making packaging an important and differentiating aspect. By revamping our bottle design, we are aligning our packaging with our great tasting liquid and making it more relevant to consumers. El Jimador will continue to offer consumers a premium tequila at an accessible price but now with a better presentation," said Jesus Ostos, brand manager for Tequila el Jimador.
